Fashion has so many components to it. All of those components can make up different fashion blogs. Starting a fashion blog doesn’t just mean personal style. It can be petite fashion, sustainable fashion, plus-size fashion. You can write on trending styles, editorial photography, or profiles of people working in fashion. There are so many ways you can take your fashion blog which is a great thing, but it can also get messy especially if you want to include a little bit of everything.
This post will provide you some tips on how you can find your fashion blog niche.
I’ve been blogging for a few years now, and over the years I’ve developed questions and tips that has helped me hone my fashion blog and keep me focus. Here are the exacts tips I’ve used, and am still using, to hone my fashion blog.
1. What are you googling, pinning, or liking that’s related to fashion? This questions is a VITAL question to ask yourself. This is the first step to finding what it is that you are passionate about in terms of fashion. If you’ve never thought about this before, here are some tips to help you collect what you usually google or pin:
A. Look through your google search history: What have you searched for related to fashion: how to style, season trends, designer profiles, etc.?
B. Look at your pinterest boards: Do you pin outfit inspirations? Do you pin high fashion editorials?
C. Look through your social media feeds: What clothing brands are you following? What fashion personnel are you following: model, blogger, photographer, editor, designer, etc.?
This first step will help you narrow down what it is about fashion that ignites/intrigues you.
2. What are your friends/family/acquaintances asking you about when it comes to fashion? This is an important question to think about. If people around you are asking similar questions, it might be because they think you know something about that area of fashion. Which also means, it might be something other people (outside of your sphere) may want to know as well. If you don’t already pay attention to what people are asking you, here are some tips on how to start:
A. Take note when people ask you about what you’re wearing: Do they compliment how you styled a piece? Or where you got something?
B. Take note on what people are complaining or curious about: When you’re hanging out, do your friends talk about what to buy for the upcoming season? Do they wonder where to get a more affordable piece of fashion?
Collecting those questions will help you not only narrow down your niche but help you CREATE CONTENT for your blog which is a huge plus.
3. What do you wish people know more about? This doesn’t involve other people directly, but does require you to do some reflecting. What is it that you wish people knew more about? What do you, on your own time, research about. The tips from number 1 will definitely help you answer this question, but here is an additional tip to assist you:
A. Think bigger than yourself: In the realm of this big world, what is it that you want others to know more about? For example, are you into the environment or fair-trade? Are you into helping the refugee crisis or helping underprivileged kids get a better education?
Why would you need to think this? Because this will fuel the bigger picture of your fashion blog. This past NY Fashion week, many designers and fashion bloggers made and took a stance. Fashion is a huge industry. While there are controversial discussions within the fashion industry itself, it’s still an industry that can bring awareness. By figuring out what drives you will help you bring awareness through your blog and your brand.
And those are 3 tips that have helped transformed my blog tremendously. I hope they will act as a guide and help you find your niche. I want to remind you that, like how you will change, your fashion blog will change with you and that’s okay. These tips are great to repeatedly reflect on to keep honing the direction of your blog.
